Reasons Rural America is Great

Here at SERCAP we are champions for rural America. With natural beauty, lush mountains, and abundant farmland, it’s no surprise that many of us choose to call these places home. In addition to the natural beauty, rural America forms the backbone of our nation’s economy. From raw materials to agricultural production, this land quite literally feeds and clothes us.

Without the support of rural America and its people, our nation would not be where it is today. The landscape provides fertile land, caring and compassionate farmers, hard workers, and the means to produce many of the materials we use every day.

These are just a few of the reasons why we love rural America.

Natural Beauty

Whether you’re driving through a beautiful countryside on a Fall day or working farmland that’s been in your family for generations, no one can deny the raw, natural beauty of rural America. From rolling Appalachian mountains to expansive fields of wheat and corn, the landscape is often awe-inspiring.

All of that natural beauty not only provides aesthetic beauty but many ecological benefits as well. From infrastructure for water resources to raw natural resources like coal and timber, rural America provides many of the materials and utilities that we couldn’t live without.

This is something we value highly as one of Virginia’s leading providers in the field of water and wastewater. Since the mid-1960s, we have backed rural America with services and programs to facilitate water and wastewater infrastructure for individuals and on the community level. Over the decades we have been around, we have also evolved to ensure individuals have access to clean, dry, and safe housing.

Hardworking People

From factory workers to farmers to school teachers, one thing is a consistent thread amongst all the people that call this place home: a strong work ethic and drive to succeed.

In today’s evolving economy, many parts of the country are transitioning away from historic industries like coal. Many of rural America’s people are forced to find work wherever they can and make sacrifices in order to support themselves and their families. Despite all that, rural America’s hardworking people refuse to give up--and that inspires us.

The Backbone of America

It is vital that the rural areas of the United States are planted, preserved and harvested thoughtfully. Farmland in states including North Carolina, South CarolinaGeorgia and Virginia—all areas in which we provide water services—is of great importance to us.

With over 44,800 active farms in Virginia, the home state to our company headquarters, we understand and value that agriculture is the state’s leading industry. The rural landscape and amazing people who work these lands truly work to meet the needs of the people of our country.  We also recognize that for decades, rural leaders have been working hard to court jobs to their communities. The natural tension between the need to conserve farmland and the desire to compete for business and industry is one of the leading issues we address when we work with communities to develop their capacity for economic development.

It is critical that these communities have the water and wastewater systems in place to support their needs. We must provide these communities--and the great people who make up the communities--with the support and resources needed to obtain their basic needs.

We are Here to Support Rural America

We are committed to helping rural communities maintain the basic necessities of life that everyone deserves. Rural America is great for many reasons, but to us, rural America remains relevant, powerful, and beloved, because it’s our home.
