From the stunning marsh preserves in Delaware to the scenic beaches of Florida, our team at SERCAP serves seven states along the east coast of the United States. These states include Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. In this series, we are going to tell you about some of our favorite things about each state in our seven-state region.
Let’s start with the state in which our headquarters is located: Virginia! From historic sites to outdoor adventures, this scenic state has so much to offer.
History
One aspect that sets Virginia apart from the rest is its rich history. There are historic sites located all over the state, one of the most famous being Jamestown. Located along the James River, this settlement was the first permanent settlement in the Americas. Located further inland in Charlottesville, Virginia, Monticello is another great place to visit. This estate was home to the author of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson!
Chesapeake Bay
Here at SERCAP, we believe that Water is Life! This list of favorites would not be complete without mentioning the Chesapeake Bay (opens new window). This impressive body of water is approximately 200 miles in length and holds over 15 trillion gallons of water. The bay is also an important fishery for all of the seafood lovers out there: more than 500 million pounds of seafood is harvested from the Chesapeake Bay each year!
Roanoke, Virginia
From breathtaking views of Mill Mountain to the hustle and bustle of downtown, the City of Roanoke has something for everyone and we are fortunate enough that our headquarters is located in this beautiful city. We may be a little biased but one visit to this town and you’ll understand why it made our favorites list. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwest Virginia, Roanoke is known for the Mill Mountain Star that overlooks the city from the top of Mill Mountain.
Rural Communities
Of course, we can’t forget to mention Virginia’s rural communities. From the natural beauty of the landscape to the hardworking people who live there, there are many reasons why these communities are one of our favorites things about Virginia. These places provide us with many of the products we use everyday, including timber a wide range of agricultural products. Here at SERCAP, we are champions of rural communities and pride ourselves on bettering the lives of the individuals who live there.
State Parks
Virginia is home to a vast assortment of state parks! Natural Bridge State Park (opens new window) features a 215-foot tall natural bridge! This limestone gorge is truly breathtaking and something that we recommend seeing with your own eyes.
Smith Mountain Lake (opens new window) is another wildly popular state park here in Virginia. This state park is home to the second largest freshwater lake in Virginia and offers a variety of outdoor activities including fishing, hiking, and camping. The park even offers 20 cabins that are perfect for a weekend getaway.
