SERCAP in Action

Tuesday, 21 August 2018 Stories

Here at SERCAP, our mission is to improve the quality of life for low-income individuals by promoting affordable water and wastewater facilities, community development, environmental health, and economic self-sufficiency. In order to do so, we encourage donations through our Water is Life Fund. The generosity of our supporters makes the incredible work we do possible, and helps us change the lives of those in our communities.

Without our programs, some low-income individuals would not be able to enjoy the basic necessities of life, like structurally sound housing. For example, our very own Housing Department recently helped two individuals in Montgomery County, Virginia whose homeowners insurance was threatened due to ramps that were in poor condition and were deemed a safety hazard. Thanks to our Housing Rehabilitation Program, we were able to replace the front and back accessibility ramps on the home.

It may be hard to believe that even in the United States, there are individuals and communities who do not have access to basic necessities, but it is still a very real issue for many rural communities. Access to safe drinking water is another concern of our communities, one that we’re working to fix.

Our team was able to help an elderly man living in Bedford County, Virginia by replacing his individual household well. He had been living in his home for 14 years when his well began to malfunction. The well began to cause water flow problems and the solution was to install a new well and pump system; however, he could not afford to replace the equipment. With help from our Essential Needs Program and Loan Fund Program, we are happy to report that he has access to clean, safe drinking water in his home once again.

We also assisted a family in Buckingham County, Virginia who were unable to afford the cost of drilling a new well. Having been without water for an extended amount of time, a grandmother and her five grandchildren were in desperate need of a new well. Through the Individual Household Well Loan Program, we were able to help them install a functioning well.

Of course, we would not be able to assist these individuals and communities without our dedicated, hard-working team and those who give generously to our Water is Life Fund.

In order to help us continue to assist both individuals and communities in need, please consider making a donation to our Water is Life Fund.
