Currently, SERCAP's Regional Team is assisting residents in Charles City County, Virginia, with improvements to the wastewater collection system serving homes along Kimages Road and Wayside Road. The existing collection system serves 37 homes and relies on aging septic pump tanks, grinder pumps, and submersible pumps. Yet, the age and condition of these systems has resulted in deterioration for many of the existing septic pump tanks, creating inflow and infiltration issues and ongoing maintenance challenges. To date, 17 of the 37 households have received new grinder pump stations, with the remaining 20 homes to be addressed as part of a phased program. Yet, due to the significant cost of replacing these aging systems, the County required additional funding to continue making the
necessary improvements.
Fortunately, SERCAP’s Regional Team was able to support the County with a portion of the requisite financial assistance, to continue the project. Through its Facilities Development Program, SERCAP provided a $50,000 grant toward the $300,000 project, to support the installation of the new grinder pump stations for the 20 remaining households. Each new installation will include an HDPE tank, a submersible grinder pump, and a control panel with alarms, along with new service piping connecting the pump stations to the existing force main. Once the project is complete, homes in the Kimages and Wayside areas will have new grinder pump stations, improving wastewater system reliability and environmental resilience for the community.
Without SERCAP’s full slate of programs and services, many low-to-moderate income (LMI) households and rural communities would be forced to go without such necessities as reliable access to strong water/wastewater infrastructure, environmentally sound wastewater disposal solutions, clean drinking water, safe and affordable housing, indoor plumbing, community development and infrastructure needs, and more. It is important to remember that even in the United States in the 21st Century; there are those who do not have reliable access to clean, safe drinking water, environmentally sound septic facilities, and affordable housing.
