Safe and Affordable Housing. For All.

Recently, SERCAP’s Housing Department assisted a low-income family of three (3) living in Louisa County, VA, to complete several necessary repairs and upgrades to their home. The family, a couple and their disabled adult son, has lived in their home since 2009, and recently began experiencing difficulty with their septic system. As it turned out, their septic system was failing, however, due to the family’s low-income status they were unable to afford the cost of replacing their septic system without causing severe financial hardship. Fortunately, an organization in the community referred them to SERCAP, and the agency was able to step-in and provide financial assistance to complete the project.

Construction for the project was awarded to Coles Construction for the full $34,550.00 project cost. The contractor completed several home repairs to make the home more livable and accessible, including: installing a new septic system, installing an ADA toilet and grab bars in the bathrooms, repairing the home’s sub-flooring and structural framing under the floor, replacing several loose boards on both the front and back porches, replacing the back door, replacing faulty electrical outlets, and installing a new handicap ramp in the front of the home. The work was recently completed, and the clients once again have an affordable home that is warm, safe, dry, and handicap accessible, with a fully functioning and environmentally sound septic system.

Without SERCAP’s Housing Programs, and other similar services, many low-to-moderate income (LMI) individuals and communities would be forced to go without such necessities as safe and affordable housing, reliable access to potable water, indoor plumbing, environmentally sound septic facilities, community development and infrastructure needs, water/wastewater infrastructure solutions, and more. It is important to remember that even in the US in the 21st Century; there are those who do not have reliable access to clean, safe drinking water, environmentally sound septic facilities, and affordable housing. In order to help SERCAP continue to provide assistance to both the individuals and communities in need, please consider making a donation to SERCAP’s Water Life! Fund!
