SERCAP’s VFC Alternative Break Program is a service program which partners with Colleges/Universities and Community Host Sites to match civic-minded Student Volunteers with engaging service-learning opportunities during traditional school breaks. This year during their Fall Break, students from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Worcester, Massachusetts, travelled to the Roanoke Valley to team-up with Lick Run Farm and the Rescue Mission in order to provide a variety of services.
From October 13, 2018 to October 19, 2018, five (5) Student Volunteers from WPI worked at Lick Run Farm mulching, planting, and learning about the benefits of community farming. The students also volunteered at the Rescue Mission; stuffing Christmas Cards, and serving dinner to community members. The Student Volunteers and the VFC Alternative Break Program were recognized by Mayor Sherman Lea and the Roanoke City Council at the City Council Meeting on Monday, October 15, 2018, for their volunteer service, emphasizing the program’s impact on the community at-large.
Without SERCAP’s VFC Alternative Break Program, and other similar programs, many low-income communities would be forced to go without such necessities as community development and infrastructure needs, water/wastewater infrastructure solutions, safe and affordable housing, indoor plumbing, and more. It is important to remember that even in the US in the 21st Century; there are those who do not have reliable access to clean, safe drinking water, environmentally sound septic facilities, and affordable housing. *SERCAP’s VFC Alternative Break Program is primarily made possible through its Program Fees. Additionally, all of SERCAP’s programs in Virginia are leveraged by the Budget Appropriation from the Virginia General Assembly, which is administered by the Virginia Department of Housing & Community Development (DHCD).
