What Do We Mean by Structurally Sound Housing?

At SERCAP, we provide water & wastewater, housing, and community development assistance in an effort to improve the quality of life for individuals, households, and communities.

While we began as an organization dedicated to water and wastewater needs of rural communities, it was clear to us that structurally sound housing was a necessary and logical extension of our service offerings.

So what do we mean by “structurally sound” housing?

When you think of “structurally sound,” you may think of a sturdy, well-built house that is safe to live in. However, our housing department offers many more services than just construction.

Our housing department provides services such as indoor plumbing & rehabilitation, home inspections, and blower door testing. If you are unfamiliar with blower door testing, this means that we use a machine to measure the airtightness of buildings.

We believe people should have access to not only structurally sound housing, but affordable housing as well. Our grant and loan programs allow us to help individuals that are faced with financial situations. We offer grants and loans to repair potentially dangerous home improvement issues, such as roof, foundation, and other structural repairs. In addition to that, we also provide technical support to ensure that individuals are living in houses that meet HUD Housing Quality Standards.

Through our grants and loans, we also help individuals who require Aging In Place support. This program helps senior citizens ensure that their home adapts to their changing budget, mobility, and health.

In addition to helping individuals maintain the home they currently own, SERCAP assists people in improving their rental situation and even helps people purchase a home. Did you know that we have certified housing counselors here at SERCAP? They provide one-on-one counseling in a variety of areas, including: rental, pre-purchase, post-purchase, and foreclosure prevention just to name a few.

At SERCAP, we believe everyone deserves to live in a home that they feel safe in. If you are currently facing housing issues, don’t feel like you have to work through them alone. We are able to connect you with resources, and we encourage you to reach out and learn more about our process. Our team is dedicated to making sure individuals have adequate housing that will keep them safe, happy, and healthy for the long haul.
